OPINIONS OF THE PBESS

One of '* Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools" wiites: "Thanks for jour admirable First Freneh Booh, which seems to me remarkably wéll adapted, in respect of both scope and arrangement, for school nse. It ooght to be, and I think will be, largely adopted."

**This is a bock, smaU as regards size and price, but eontaining in qnontity at least matter which wonld fumish forth far larger and more prétentions volnmes. M. Bné's method and treatment are excellent ; to anj person unacquainted with Freneh, but wishing to study that langoage, or to any teacher wishing to form classes for its study, we oan eordially recommend bis work. Books for use in school or class are often compiled by others than teachers, and the resuit is not àlways satisfactory. M. Bué is a teacher himself, and bis lassons show that he nnderstands the dif&culties bis brethren may labour under, and the best ineans by which they can be surmounted. We are glad to learn that the Tolnme under notice bas been adopted by the London School Board.'* — The Iriih Teachen' Journal, Feb. 2nd, 1878.

" This little book is a model both of cheapness and of completeness. 'bï 176 pages it gives beginners the principal rules of the Frenoh «ûoidence, thus enabling them to practise conversation after a vexy few

lesBons. Iff. Bnê ooicm«neM by a Ust of easy and nsefnl words to be learned by heaxt; the elementary grammar cornes nezt, eaoh chapter being followed by a Yooabiilazy and two exercises. Tbe reading lessons which teriumate the volmne are amasing anecdotes of gradnated difficulty, and the vocabnlaries are so oompiled as to predade tbe necessity of a separate dictionary. The pnpil bas thus in a veiy smidl dnodecimo ail the belp be requires towards a qnick and easy mastexy of the éléments of the Frencb langoage.'' — School Bàard Chronicle.

"M. Bué's * First Freneb Book' is mnch to be commended. Tha lessons are very graduai, and the mies are explained ^ith a simplidW that muet greatly help both teaoher and pnpil. At the end of eacA lessoD a short vocabnlary, a model exercise, and a conversation are given. ▲t the end of the verbs is a * short chapter for the inquisitive/ which is well worth getting np, even by more adyanoed pupils. The ohief ment of elementary books of this kind lies in their arrangement, and in ihis reépect we baye seen no better book than M. Buô's.'*— âfe/iool aiMwdton, NoY. lOth, 1877.

'A handy little volnme, which may serre with adyantage as an introduction to the study of more élaborate works.'* — The Pictoriai World, Oot. 13, 1877.

"This is one of tbe best first-books to Frenoh that bas ever been pnblished. The difficulties of the langnage are presented in a séries of exercises and lessons, through which the stndent is led before be realisefs that be bas really had gennine difficulties presented to him. The ▼ocabularies contained in aie book bave been selected very skilfally. A * short chapter for the inquisitive ' is excellent. There is a i^ench-English Tocabulary containing nearly 1,600 words in most fréquent use." — Thê Weekly Times, Oct. 14, 1877.

"This is a very excellent little work, and will be welcomed both in schools and for private teaohing. It bears the impress of an experienced teacher; and is marked with great care in pointing ont the pecnliarities of the languagé in construction, idiom, and pronunciation. The printing also desenres a word of notice, the yariations in termina tion, Ac, to which it is desired to call attention, being given in excellent bold type — so that the utmost use is made of the eye — probably the most powerful of ail sensés in assisting the memory, especially in the case of yonng people. There is no donbt that it will quite fulfil the aathor's wishj modestly expressed in the préface, of becoming *a useful and handj primer.'" — The London and China Express^ Oct. 12, 1877.

"A great deal more of the information needed by a beginner than much larger works often contain, will be found in this little pocket grammar and exercise book. Only an experienced teacher could so well anticipate the preliminaiy difficulties and remove them from the path of a young lingoist as M. Ba6 bas done in bis primer*"— -Pu6Zic (fpinio% Nov. 10, 1877.
