T^HIS is a complète first year book, compact and concise and yet full enough to be accurate and thorough. It is in two Parts : Part I. consists of exercises and refers constantly to Part II. which is a brief French grammar.
The book is truly practical, that is, it is based upon connected language, and it provides référence to a connected statement of grammatical rules. The particular attention of instructors is invited to this feature, not to be found in other books.
The method of the book permits the introduction of conversational exercises at any stage of the course.
The exercises are interesting in theraselves. Besides this, they are French in substance as well as in form.
This introduction can be used with any reader or set of reading books.

JJ^ADAME THÉRÈSE is the masterpiece of Erckmann- Chatrian, and a masterpiece of French literature. The aim of the notes is to aid pupils to read the book rapidly, but thoroughly. They are such notes as actual expérience with the book in the class-room has proved to be necessary.

ri'^IIE study of " The Miser " is interesting, not because of the sympathetic aspect of the subject-matter, but rather on account of its intense dramatic points, its bright-colored moving force, its piquant scènes and situations, and an abundance of comic détails. A bibliography of Molière, literary appréciations, a fullness of explanatory notes on the same page with the text, and a very complète vocabulary make this édition most complète and serviceable.
Popular Science. French Prose,
Edited and annotated by Jules Luquiens, Professor of Modem Languages in Yale University. 12mo. 252 pages. Mailing price, 70 cents ; for introduction, 60 cents.
n^HTS volume is not, strictly speaking, a scientific reader ; ils aim is simply to provide material suitable for imparting the habit of cai*eful reading and, in a measure, the vocabulary of scientific literature. Articles of pure science are valuable, in the hands of teachers familiar with the technicalities of the subject treated, but they lay too heavy a burden upon the average instructor of modem languages. Thèse sélections hâve therefore been made from that branch of writing which, while drawing upon facts and scientific data for material, permits the display of the author's fancy or brightness, and blends instruction with interest.
A. G. Cameron, Prof, of French in Yale University: I am using it.
Such use is sufSeient index of appréciation in itself. The scientific sélections are admirable.
La Prise de La Bastille.
Chas. F. Kroeh, Professor of German in the . Stevens InstUute of Technology f Hohoken^ N.J. : The sélections are well chosen and long enough to be interesting.
Par J. Michelet. Edited and annotated by Jules Luquiens, Professor of Modem Languages in Yale University. 12mo. Paper. 55 pages. Mailing price, 25 cents ; for introduction, 20 cents.
rpHIS sélection is condensed from Michelet's "History of the French Révolution." It is a brilliant pen-picture illustrating the great historian's vividness of style and glowing enthusiasm.
£. S. Joynes, Department of Modem. Languages in Carolina Collège^ Columbiaf S.C: It pré-
sents a brilliant story of a notable event in a very convenient shape.
La Cigale Chez les Fourmis, comédie en un ad».
Par MM. Ernest Legouvë et Eugène Labiche. With English notes by Alphonse N. van Dabll, Professor of Modem Languages in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 12mo. Paper. 37 pages. Mailing price, 25 cents ; for introduction, 20 cents.
rPHIS play has, perhaps, no transcendent merit, but it has life.
It is a bright and sparkling little comedy, and not difficult
even for young pupils. It will prove very interesing to its readers.
Gontemporary French W ri ter s.
Edited and annotated bv Rosine Mbllé, Diplômée de l'Académie de Paris et TUniversité de France. 12mo. xvi + 212 pages. Mailing priée, 85 cents ; for introduction, 75 cents.
"lyTANY students of the French language who are familiar with the prose of ordinary writers, or capable of reading their Works, find themselves at sea when they open the books of the men who are now directing the thought and shaping the literature of France. This book should be a welcome aid to this class of students. It is the first attempt, so far as we know, to fill the want that has been felt.
The volume contains sélections from the French writers of the second part of the nineteenth century, and is accompanied with literary notices, and historical, geographical, etymological, grammatical, and explanatory notes.
Morceaux Choisis d'Alphonse Daudet
Edited and annotated by Frank W. Frbeborn, Master in the Boston Latin School. 12mo. Cloth. tx + 227 pages. Mailing price, 85 cents ; for introduction, 75 cents.
rPHIS book is issued to supply a more extended course of reading from Daudet than is now published in any one text-book, to fumish a more harmonious and agreeable séries of extracts, and to provide the learner with such explanations of the author's many historical, biographical, and literary allusions as will make the brilliancy of his style better appreciated. A large part of the text has never before been prepared for school use, and yet it is taken from his best known and most characteristic books. In addition, M. Daudet has supplied a new sketch, especially pi*epared for this work, and has kindly aided the editor by valuable explanations of certain phrases and allusions.
A. P. Montagne, Profetsor of Latin in Cohimblan Universityt Washington^ D.C.: The sélections are in the best taste, and admirable exponents of the author's style ; the notes are scholarly, helpfui, and accurate.
L. Osoar Knhni, Professor of French in Wealeyun Unlversity^ Middletoiont Conn.: The typography and book-work has pleased me very much. . . . Daudet needs no commendation. I hâve been very fond of him, and hope to use your édition.
