Page 5. — 1. la Terreur, the " Reign of Terror." This expression is used to designate that period of the French Révolution (1 793-1 794) during which thousands of innocent people were sent to the guillotine.

2. Pan II. As the Republic was established on September 22, 1 792, the year 1 794 was the second year of the new era.

3. le 29 germinal. The " Convention Nationale," wishing to make things ail over, had adopted a new calendar beginning on the day of the proclamation of the Republic (Sept. 22, 1792). The month of Germinal began on March 20th and finished on April I9th.
