EXERCISES ON THE VOCABULARY
1. We make up the stories in English and introduce the French words, which the pupils repeat after us. Example : (page 49) I knew a young girl called M<Hanie (all repeat Mêlanie)\ she was very clever, habile (all say habile.) refined (raffiiK^e). pretty (jolie), rich (riche) ; she lived in (habite?-) a magnificent place (s^iperbe logis), etc.
2. How TO FORM MENTAL PICTURES. As it is of the highest importance that the learner should think in French from the very beginning, we make him realize the value of every French word without mental translation, as follows : Teacher— Close your eyes ; picture to yourself a young girl about seventeen years of age. Is she before you? Yes; well, call her Mrlanie. Her large forehead and expressive eyes show her to be clever. Realize that idea in French and say : habile. By her gait and manner we perceive she is refined, say rajji'iu'e, and conceive this idea in French, etc.
3. Open your eyes and think every word in French as if it were your own language ; speak and gesticulate after me : Mclanie, habile, rajjlm'e, jolie, riche, habiter, superbe logis, bâti, sommet, colline, etc.
