— Le passage qui s'y rapporte est ainsi conçu : When 1 made triis déclaration, I was not aware, that a letter. dated 15th of last October, t'rom Cardinal de Angelis, was awaiting my arrivai in the hands of one of the suffragan Bishops of this Province, which, however I received only yesterday.
In this letter the Cardinal states that my Concio had been subniitted to the officiai organ of papal authority in Rome ; had been unanimously condemned as contraining [sic!] grave errors; but that through personal considérations had not appeared among the list of prohibited works. The writer exhorted me to anticipate its public condemnation by adhering explicitly to the decrees of the Gouncil. In my reply, written immediately afler the letter came to hand, I made no retraction of the concio, but merely stated, that more than two months ago 1 had communicated to the Cardinal Prefect of the Propaganda the fact of my submission. And yet I hâve reason to think that my answer will not be satisfactory, as the Pope sad [sic !] to the Rector of the American Collège, when he announced to him my submission : « still he must retract those pamphlets published ad Naples. » This I shall not do, no matter what the conséquences may be.
