Tins îs Exhibit "B" referred to in the déclaration of Daniel Danis, made before me this 9th day of April 1920.
Daniel Danis, Gec. A. S'iiles,
A. Com. &c., C0PIE Cornwall, Ont., April, 9th, 1920.
To The Minister of Justice,
Parlîament Buildings, Ottawa.
Honourabk and Dear Sir :
I beg to enclose you the remarks of the Honourable Justice Lennox in Court at the last Sittings of the Suprême Court for Ontario, hère at Cornwall. I think such remarks were uncalled for. The word derorted was most unfortunate and should not hâve bcen used and any judge who at this time makes such statement shouid, I submit, be called to order. If the British Empire had to déport ail persons not speaking the English language, we would possibly loose one-hnlf of the population. For a man on the hench of the Suprême Court of Ontario to give vent to such feelings and sentiments towards the French people and to show such bigotry and préjudice is beyond my compréhension.
1 know many French people, even in Ontario, who owing to conditions and circumstances do not speak the English language and I do not think that it is a crime. Some French people from Québec, advanced in years, some at 50, C0, etc., corne to Ontario and live altogether in a French settlement, where English is not spoken, and how would you expect such people to learn the English language.
Respectfully yours,
(Signed) Daniel Danis.
Justice Lennox in his remarks evidently makes no distinction between a French Canadian and a foreigner. He forgets that the French Canadian is the pioneer of this country and came hère centuries ago. Ile forgets the fact that the French Canadian is not a foreigner to this country, he forgets our constitution. A man who cannot distinguish between a French Canadian and a foreigner must ignore many other things. When you compare a French Canadian to a foreigner, you provoke and insuit him. Fil bet ton to bne thaï Justice Lennox does not know and could not know the French language.
Daniel Danis.
