21. numismate : one skilled in the science of coins and metals.

22. fit rage d^aboiementa et de menaces : barked furiously and threateningly.

23. en pleine bergerie : in the very midst of a pastoral poem.

24. Nausicaa : the héroïne of one of the most pleasing épisodes of Homer's Odyssey. Ulysses, pursued by the hatred of Neptune, was driven by a tempest to the island of the Phaeacians and cast ashore. He fell asleep on the beach. Suddenly merry shouts awakened him. The daughter of Alcinoiis, king of the island, had corne with her attendants at early dawn, to wash her father's garments in the river near by. After the work was done, the maidens disported themselves on the banks, and it was their joyous cries that Ulysses had heard. At sight of him, they dispersed, leaving Nausicaa alone undismayed. She greeted him kindly and showed him the way to her father's palace, where he was hospitably received.
