PREFACE
A famous masterpiece and idéal elementary text like " La Jeune Sibérienne " needs no recommendation. The text of this édition is taken from an édition published by Hachette et C*®. After comparison with two other texts several changes were made in the spelling and punctuation.
The Notes aim to fumish such information as is needed fpr a clear understanding of the story, and a review of the principles of grammar exemplified in the text. Translations of difficult passages will generally be found in the Vocabulary.
The material for conversation in French, necessarily brief from lack of space, will at least give the pupil something definite to prépare outside of the class. It is assumed that the teacher will supplément this material with much work of his own. The sentences in English for translation into French are framed to illustrate the principles of grammar stated in the Notes.
The Vocabulary is intended to be complète and suited to the needs of beginners in translating French. To save the pupiPs time the idioms are generally listed under two key-words instead of one.
The pronunciation of Russian names of places, rivers, etc. varies usually with différent authorities ; I hâve taken Webster's New International Dictionary as the standard in ail cases where a Word could be found there.
I shall be grateful to users of this book for the correction of
any errors,
