modifying phrase is more common in French than the corresponding ‘ I know not ’ in English. In 49, 20, we hâve ‘ on accuse ce corps de je ne sais combien de choses,' which may be rendered literally. In the présent passage the literal rendering woiild not be good. Say ‘ an indefinable.’ So in such phrases as “ Un je ne sais quel charme " (66, 34), ‘ an indescribable charm.’
