‹ La perle noire (volume 2)Chapitre 83 sur 187 · Monsieur le connaît. Monsieur and madame = master · texte numérisé non relu

Monsieur le connaît. Monsieur and madame = master

and mistress, when used by servants of their employers. Note that the respectful address of servant to master is not vous le connaissez, but Monsieur le connaît. So in addressing superiors generally, cf. 30, 19. Note p. 30, 1. 30.

28. — Il y a un mois. Lit. there is a month [since then], ‘ a month ago.’

30. 3. — Se fit répéter. The personal pronoun object whether of

faire or the infinité that follows it must be regarded as the object of faire ; hence se, though the object of répéter, précédés fit. (II. Î59).) The infinitive form répéter may be explained as having someone or them, etc., understood : had (made) [them] repeat the question to her ; or it may be regarded as the simple for the perfect infinitive : made the question to be repeated to her. (II. 248, 258. ) Rende r : ‘had the question repeated to her.’
