Elle le dirait . . . .que j’attesterais son innocence

When the logical dépendent clause assumes the place (as here) of the grammatical principal clause, the logical principal clause is introduced usually by que. Si elle le disait f attesterais encore son innocence = Elle le dÀrait que f attesterais encore son innocence. The difiference in tense {disait, dirait) is due to the fact that after si the imperf. is used with the force of an imperf. fut. (condit.) An analogous construction is found in English : ‘ She might say it and I should testify to her innocence.’

32. — Mais ma conscience. ^ Maîs^ here is scarcely the adversative conjunction. It is rather like the Eng. ‘ why,’ a connecting link with the preceding words.

33. 1. — N’est pas d’une coupable. Of. p. 5., 1. 22, note. ‘Is

not characteristie of one who is guilty !’

7. — Elle s’appelle la Raison. Se is indirect. Render, • the former calls reason to her aid.’
