L 8. Jésus Dieu! 'my goodness.' This phrase is more innocent to a Frenchman's ears than its literal translation would be to an Englishman's.

1. 9. Qu''est ce qui a fait cela ? ' what did that ? ' Que, as interrogative pronoun, refers to things, and qui to persons.

Page 32, line 13. Le camarade, 'our (or my) comrade.' The article is used familiarly for the poss. pron.

1. 13. Faisait le gust, ' was watching.' Observe that the imperfect coiTesponds to the English progressive past. Cf. pt 18, L 9.
