64. V. le curieux ouvrage Utilitarianism unmasked, a letter to the Rev. M. A. Gathercole (of Mossford Lodge, Great Ilford, Essex) on the life, death, and philosophy of Jeremy Bentham, forming a supplement to the eighth article in no 158 of the Edinburgh Review, by the Rev. John F. Colls, D. D., of Trinity College, Cambridge, minister of St. Peter’s episcopal chapel, Queen Square, St James’s Park, author of « a vindicacation of infant baptism », etc., ete., London, 1844. Il a gardé le début, à lui dicté, d’un discours contre l'Eglise établie : «In comparison of the corruption of which the Clerical Department is the seat, the corruption of which Lay Departments are the seats, is purily. If to obtain money on false pretences, — if to do that for which an unprotected man is regarded as being undeservedly consigned to Botany Bay or the Hulks, is immorality — the English and Irish Clergy is composed of a set of men whose conduct is essentially and most flagrantly immoral ».

65. Graham Wallas, Life of Francis Place, pp. 73 sqq. Cf. Romilly, 24 sept. 1817: We found him passing his time, as he has always been passing it since I have known him, which is now more than thirty years, closely applying himself for six or eight hours a day in writing upon laws and legislation, and in composing his Civil and Criminal Codes ; and spending the remaining hours of every day in reading, or taking exereise by way of fitting himself for his labours, or, to use his own strangely invented phraseology, taking his ante-jentacular and post-prandial walks, to prepare himself for his task of codification (Mem., vol. HI, pp. 315-6).
