91. Bowring, vol. X, pp. 389-390 : Bentham à Dumont, 28 juin 1802 : Benthamile — Benthamite ? what sortof an animal is that? — I can’t find any such word in Boyer’s Dictionary. As to religion — to be sure a new religion would be an odd sort of thing without a name : accordingly there ought to be one for it at least for the professors of it. Utilitarian (Angl.) Utilitairien (Gall.) would be the mot propre. Consult the Physical Class of the Institut. :
92. 1811. Titre de la page : Utilitarian. — Edward, l'utilitaire répond ainsi à Marianne, qui incarne la sensibilité, et admire un paysage «pittoresque» : «I have no knowledge of the picturesque... I call it a very fine country... It exactly answers my idea of a fine country, because it unites beauty with utility ». Et Marianne répond: «It is very true that admiration of landscape scenery is become a mere jargon. Everebody pretends to feel and tries to describe with the taste and elegance of him who first defined what picturesque beauty was. 1 detest jargon of every kind, and sometimes I have kept my feelings to myself, because I could find no language to describe them in but what was worn and hackneyed out of all sense and meaning. »
93. Galt, Annals of the Parish ; or the Chronicle of Dalmailing, during the ministry of the Rev. Micah Balwhidder, written by himself, Edinburgh, 1821. — Balwhidder raconte comment, en 1794, sa paroisse est divisée en Government-men et Jacobins. — Sermons de Balwhidder : «that the Christianity of it (benevolence) was neither enlarged nor bettered by being baptized with the Greek name of philanthropy. With well-doing, however,
I went roundly to work. I told my people that I thought they had more sense than to secede from Christianity to become utilitarians, for that it would be a confession of ignorance vf the faith they deserted, seeing that it was the main duty ineulcated by our religion to do all in morals and manners, to which the new doctrine of utility pretended.
