Lui me dit, said to me. Note the emphatic use of lui, moi, toi, as subjects in modem French. In Old French, the nominatives, il, je, tu, were always used. 3. n'auraient fait, would hâve done. The ne has no négative meaning. 4. vous allez le voir, you will see. The le does not refer to the man, but to a whole clause understood : how he acted. Le, used instead of an adjective or a clause, is the only true neuter which is left in the French language. 5. Ça me faisait plaisir à voir, moi, it pleased me to see that. Ça for cela is used only in familiar style. The whole sentence is idiomatic. 6. c'est gentil à vous, it is nice on your part. 7. madame, the lady. The French use monsieur, madame, mademoiselle for politeness, without the name of the person. Such expressions are rendered in English : the gentleman, the lady, the y oung lady. cette grande coquine de lettre, that la?ge letter. The word coquine does not mean hère rascal or rogue, but is merely used as a superlative to emphasize the adjective grande. 9. Ça faisait vraiment de bons petits enfants, they were indeed good little children. Faire is used in many idiomatic expressions ; compare the above sentence with il faisait l enfant, he acted like a child, he played the part of a child, il faisait le fou, he pretended to be crazy. 10. je vous
