CAREFULLY EDITED BY SCHOLARS FAMILIAR WITH THE NEEDS OF THE CLASS-ROOM

The disting^ishine features of the Séries are as follows :

The Texts are chosen only from modéra German authors^ io order to givt the pupil spécimens of the languag^e as it is noYi written and spoken. The German prose style of the présent differs so larfçely from that of the classical period of German literature, from which the books in the hands of pupils are fi^ener* ally taken, that the want of such texts must hâve been felt by erery teacher of German.

Bach volume contains, either in excerpt or in exttnao^ a pièce •f German prose which, whilst continuons enough to sustain interest^ill not be too long to be finished in the work of a term or two.

The Séries is composed of two progressive courses, the Elementary and the Advanced. Some of the volumes of the Elementary Course contain, in addition to the notes, a complète alphabetical yocabulary. In the remaining volumes of the Séries difficulties of meaning, to which the ordinarv school dictionaries offer no clew, are deait with in the notes at the end of each book.

In order not to overburden the vocabularies with verbal forma occurring in the text, a list of the commoner strong verbs is added as an appendix to the volumes of the Elementary Course.

The modem German orthography is used throughout.

The same grammatical terminology is used in ail the volumes of the Séries.

The volumes are attractively bound in cloth, and the type is large and clear.

Ail the elementary numbers contain a valuable appendix on the ■trong and weak verbs.

III. An Analytical and Practical French Grammar. i2mo, 554 pages, $1.50.

This work contains a complète System for learning to read, write, and speak the language. The practical part consists of oral exercises in the form of questions, which the teacher asks of the pupil, who is to answer them directly in French. This method insures fluency of utterance and correct pronunciation, and exercises the pupil in speaking French from the beginning.

The theoretical part of the work comprises the whole grammar in fifty-four lessons, accompanied by English exercises to be translated into French. The development of the différent éléments is in harmony with the logical construction of sentences.

Three lessons are devoted to Etyrnology, treating of words derived from the Latin and common to both French and English. This is an interesting part of the work.

Six lessons hâve been added, giving subjects for composition ; containing some of the principal idioms in the language.

This work is the most complète text-book of French published in this country.
