Acte I, Se. IL] NOTES. 9i
L. 87. à ce point s'oublier, etc.: 'sofarforget herself as to ad mit,' etc. the infinitive exclamatory or absolute.
Z. 90. Vous souvient-il, impersonal, for the more common reflexive.
Z. 92. Avant que je ni abaisse ; ' Sooner than condescend,' etc. Note the subjunctive.
Z. 93. Je te répondrais bien : ' I might well answer you, that in noble soûls,' etc. Note this use of the conditional.
Z. 94. Le seul mérite : ' merit alone : ' novv commonly le mérite
seul. — a droit : compare 1. 29, n'a trait. — flammes, \\)aç.feux, Lu.
Z. 97. Mais je n'en veux point suivre : eu refers to exemples ;
'but I will follow none,' etc. s'engage — 'is involved, or com-
promised ' — is subjunctive.
Z. 99. qu' étant fille de roi : the construction is not logical ; \ve should expectyV to follow, as subject.
Z. 107. en dépend ; 'dépends upon it.' Note the idiom, dépendre de ; also in the next line, vit de ; ' lives upon'
L. 109. faute de: 'for want (fault) of.' s'éteint: 'dies out.' Note the reflexive idiom,
Z. 114. aimable, in the original sensé of Lat. amabilis ; 'may be loved ; ' as Molière says (L'Avare, 1. 482), le bien n'est pas considérable — ' not to be considered.'
Z. 115. à regret: ' with regret.' See note, 1. 20. de là, 'thence,' 'frorn that.'
Z. 117. que l'amour me contraigne : note the force of the subjunctive, 'that love should constrain me;' depending not upon the verb vois alone, but upon the whole expression, y> vois avec chagrin. The subjunctive is construed as if the sensé were simply je me chagrine que, etc.
Z. i2i. Je le crains et souhaite: "L'usage veut que l'on répète le pronom le, d'autant plus que les deux verbes sont de signification fort différente, et qu'autrement le mot de souhaite, sans pronom, fait attendre quelque chose ensuite," remarks the Academy in its ' Sentiments sur le Cid.' The student may well note the departure from the gênerai rule, but should not fail to observe the emphatic force of the omission, by which the verbs are brought mto closer and stronger contrast. Compare a like ellipsis, L 124.
Z. 131. 'alike its charm and its power;' corresponding, respectively to si doux and si cuisant. In the next line, however, the order is suddenly inverted, and with fine effect.
Z. 135. Note the distinction between espérance and espoir. L. 138. dedans, in the sensé of dans. Dedans is now used only as an adverb, or in compound phrases, such as par dedans, en dedans de, etc.
Z. 141. d'où ; compare 1. 97, and de là, 1. 116; this use of the adverb for the pronoun was more fréquent than now.
