L. 690. allégeance, in the sensé of allégement

L. 694. Note the emphatic répétition of mais : 'not to me, but to your crown ; not to me, but, etc.'

L. 696. Tout ce qu enorgueillit. Chimène is anxious to déclare that her pursuit of Rodrigue is not on her own account so much as on the king's. L. 699. Et qu'un, etc. Translate : ' How unfortunate a fate,' etc. Compare 1. 523.

L. 703. Pour avoir trop vécu : for (in conséquence of) having lived too long.' For pour, compare 1. 447 ; for trop, 1. 615.

L. 705. Note the singular verb; also the omission of the article, as usual with ni — hère implied.

L. 711. harnois : modem form, harnais ; but harnois is still used in the figurative sensé, as hère, for ' armor.'

L. 714. Descendaient — for auraient, or eussent, descendu — adds force to the statement, as if a fact already assumed as certain —
