L. 817. flamme, in sensé of amour. Rarely used thus absolutely. Expressions like ?najlamme, S80 are fréquent.
L. 818. The Academy censures this expression as unmeaning; yet the sensé is found in the contrast between cœur and âme, as displayed in the following lines. We may translate : ' vvithout distracting my purpose.'
L. 819. Et quoi que — de pouvoir, etc. The Academy remarks : " Cette façon de parler n'est pas française ; il fallait dire quelque Pouvoir que," etc. The sensé, however, is perfectly clear.
L. 820. Je ne consulte point pour : ' I do not hesitate to,' etc.
L. 822. son intérêt : ' his fate ; ' that is, his concernment herein. This use of the vvord is censured by the Academy.
L. 823. contre leur effort, 'in spite of their influence,' — leur refening to son intérêt and mon cœur. This expression, which is the reading of Lépan (see Prefatory Note), is censured by the Academy. The usual reading, ' malgré son effort,' seems better, son referring to cœur.
L. 831. étant mort, etc.: i.e. 'dead, and dying almost in my arms.'
L. 832. crîra for criera. Similar examples hereafter. orrai, old future of ouïr : ' and shall I not hear ? '
L. 834. Croira ne lui devoir, as 1. 421. But note the différent sensé of the inf. with penser, 1. 825, 846. For suborneur, see 1. 337.
