Mtde is a kînd of slipper, and the word is used in the expression, la mule du pape, to designate the slipper wom by the Pontiff on occasions of the ceremony of kissing the Pope's toe, a circumstance conferring a spécial dignity upon this particular article of f ootwear. Many persons use the above expression in thinking of the animal mvJe (cf. Daudct's ** conte," La Mule du Pape), since the meaning of slipper is no longer regularly associated with the word.
