Bohémien. Gypsy, wanderer, nomad. Members of
this class of vagrants were popularly supposed, in Western Europe, to corne from Bohemia, where conditions of lif e were very unsettled in the 15th- 17th centuries, and where wholesale expatriation was caused by civil and religions strife. The genuine gypsies (also known in French by the names of égyptiens, tziganes) are believed to be of Asiatic origin. They are most common in Hungary and Spain, where they are so numerous as to be reckoned as a distinct class of population.
