D^un Mohican, i, e., of a North American Indîan
Strictly speaking, Mohican (or Mahican) was the name of a loose confederacy of N. A. Indians along the upper Hudson, which later migrated to western Ohio and there lost its identity (cf. Cooper's "Last of the Mohicans'*); while the Mohegans (or Monhegans) were a division of this conf ederacy inhabiting the territory around the lower Connecticut. But the terms, although historically distinct, are usually confused.
