There are two kinds of annotations throughout the work :

Ist. Critical explanations of the text, classical imitations, literary, biographical, historical and geographical notices. Thèse are referred to by letters, and will be found at the end ofeach extract,

2ndly. The translation of idiomatic passages, with grammatical observations. Thèse are referred to by ligures, and will be found at the end of the look,

By the above arrangement the apparatus of asterisks, brackets, and foot-notes is entirely avoided. " The latter are so répulsive to young readers, that what is presented to them in this way is in great danger of never being read at ail." {Préface to Zumpfs Latin Grammar.)

For the translation, etymology and analysis of the récurrent words, such as articles, pronouns, adverbs, prépositions, conjunctions, &c, the student is referred to the Manuel étymologique.

In the annotations given at the end of the book, the verbs of the first four pages are given in the Infmitive mood. Their conjugation will be found by referring to the Synoptical Tables in the French Class-Boofc, or Grammar, The same verb is not inserted more than once, except when it gives rise to some particular difficulty.
