9. Tavemier : a famous traveller (1605-1689). After visiting several times most of the eastern countries as a diamond merchant, he compiled a detailed account of his travels, entitled Foyages en Turquie, en Perse et aux Indes.

Chardin (1643-1713), son of a jeweller who sent him to the East Indies to buy diamonds, spent several years in Persia, and on his return published his Voyage en Perse, which is said to be remarkable for its accuracy. Having settled in London, he was knighted by Charles IL, who sent him to Holland as envoy.
