1. I. criée par la France, The old Duchy of Burgùndy had been held by a family allied by birth to the Capet line. This family died ont in 1361, and the duchy fell to John, king of France, by inheritance. He gave it to his fourth son, Philip the Bold. In 1363 Philip married Margaret, widow of the last Duke of the former line, who was daughter of Louis Count of Flanders. He thus at the death of the Count acquired Flanders, Artois, &c.
