Our Very BELOVED BRETHREN,

[t is with great joy that we announce to you that His Holiness the Pope Leo XIII has voughsafed to extend to the entire world the Jubilee of the Holy Year: it is with an unspeakable pleasure that we promulgate the Eneyelical Tei poris quidem saeri whieh grants to us the most plenary indulgence of this Jubilee.

Last year, no less than a million pilgrims repaired to Rome to prostrate themselves upon the pavings of its four greater basiliens, pray therein. aecording to the intention of the Viear of Jesus-Christ, and draw spiritual riches in abundance from the treasure of the Church whieh had been opened by the paternal and generous hand of its August Head.

For six months in the present year, eatholies of the whole universe, wherever they may be found, will have the privilege to enjoy the same favours and gain the same indulgence.

Hence it is that we repeat to you on this day the words spoken by theapostle St. Paul to the first Christians: “We helping do exhort you, that you receive not the grace of God in vain, For he saith Zn an accepted time have ] heard thee : and an thee day of sgalration have I helped thee, Behold, now is the acceptable time: behold now 18 the day of salvation.” (1 Cor, VI. L4)

The Jubilee is not in itself and should not be for any person n mere ceremony. [t is granted for the purpose of producing the spiritual renewal of all the faithful without any exception, whatever may be the obstacles that every one in particular has to surmount. ‘This renewal must consist in a complete reformation of our life, Tf any one should have renounced the Faith of his baptism, he must return to it; should he be in the state of sin. he ought to withdraw from such a baneful state ; the one whois indifferent as regards matters of piety

must come back to nis past rervour he that is just must

During the time of the Jubilee, God seems to forvet the interests of his justice : he wishes to exten] to all his full merey : he shows himself to be a true Father. “(fod dealeth with you as W ith his sons " (Hebr. XII 7). It is only just that we should answer his infinite woodness by an increase of zeal in his service,

The great obstacle to the renewal of our life, what prevents us from rising up to God and walking in the praetiee of a trulv christian life, is the weight of sin which overwhelms us. The Jubilee furnishes us the

occasion to remove every burden and banish sin by which we are enveloped “ Laying aside every. weight and sin whieh surround us.” (Hebr, XIE 1)

Having an ardent desire to work for the sunetifiea tion and sulvation of your souls, we beseech vou not to negleet, the present occasion, surely the most advantaveous, Which the Jubilee affords you of serving God with a greater perfection, “to be renewed in the spirit of your mind, put off the old man and put on the new man, who according to God, is created in justice, and holiness of truth ( Ephes. IV, 22, 23, 24 ). Let the more fervent ivi an example to the whole people : let those who do not believe firmly enough, be enlightened by the light of Faith: let cold and insensible christie vs inflame their hearts with the ardour of eharity : let each one persuade hinisi that the Jubilee is partieu larty his own grace and then we shall acknowledge that = the time for extraordinary repentance and merey has come at fast
