OLD MEMORIES
With Mrs. Daniel Macpherson's “ Reminiscences of Old Quebec” the readers of the Gaselte are not unacquainted. In ‘Old Memories, Amusing and Historical,’ the same entertaining writer has given us a sequel to the “ Reminiscences” The sketches in the volume comprise recollections of Quebec society more than fifty years ago and during the intervening period. Some of them are antiquarian, others, topographical, bear on the traditions and folklore of the Lower St. Lawrence ; others still relate incidents in the lives of famous people of by-gone generations. There is, for instance, an interesting account of the Quebec bank, contributed by a gentleman equally noted as a finan cier and a writer, to the Skarekolder of February 22,1884. Its fitting insertion in the volume is due to the kindly reference made in it by Mr. Stevenson to the late Mr. Charles Gethings, father of Mrs. Macpherson, Again, there is a description of that charming home of a charming family, Spencer Grange. Other biographical reminiscences are the outline of Bishop Charles
Hamilton’s career; the “ First St. Patrick’s
Society in Quebec,” which contained mention of Sir Dominick Daly, Sir Henry Caldwell, the Hon. Mr. Cochrane, brother-in-law of the second Bishop Mountain, Mr. Gethings and other prominent persons of the time. “ Society in Quebec fifty years ago,” and society in 1854, and several others. Short accounts of Sillery church, St. Matthew’s chapel ; pleasant accounts of visits to St. Léon Springs, to St. Augustin, Les Eboulements, Roberval, Lake St. John and other places; *“ country post offices, forty or fifty years ago ;” an account of the Sisal fibre industry initiated by Sir Ambrose Shea in the Bahamas ; a thrilling find of fifty-two years ago in a Quebec garret (“A Point of Honor”), and some memorial and other verses, make up the volume, Itis dedicated to Mr. J. Macpherson Lemoine, the “ cousin an: tried friend ” of Mrs. Macpherson’s late husband, and the author of “Quebec, Past and Present,” “ Maple Leaves ” and many other popular and valuable works.
