luy. Old spelling of lui

194. — i6. de la sorte. Preservation of the old demonstrative use of illam (the French article is the weakened Latin demonstrative).

196. — 7. Montfaucon. A vivid description of this wellknown gallows is given in Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris.

199. — 13. Gonzague (Nevers). The Duke of Nevers was a member of the celebrated Italian family of Gonzague.

201. — 29. le siège effroyable de 1594. This is an error; Henri IV entered Paris in 1594, but with little trouble; the siege alluded to occurred in 1590. Although Henri IV became nominally King of France in 1589, the Catholic party resisted him on account of his Protestantism; he renounced this faith in 1593 and was crowned at Chartres the following year.
