LIVRE XII

So spake the' arcb-angel Michael; then paus'd , As at tbe world's great period; and our sire , Ueplete witb joy and wonder, tbus replicd: « O Goodness infinité , Goodness immense ! il" Tbat ail this good of evil shall prodnce, And evil turn to good; more wondcrfui Than tbat whicb by création first hroughl forth Light ont of darkness! »
« Ne crains rien, dit Michel : leur protecteur suprême. Pasteur toujours soigneux, à son troupeau qu'il aime Enverra les secours que son père a promis; L'Esprit saint auprès d'eux remplacera le fils. C'est lui qui, de l'amour entretenant la flamme. Imprimera sa loi dans le fond de leur ame; Par lui, les yeux verront les dangers sans terreur, La douleur sans foiblesse , et la mort sans horreur. Je les vois ces martyrs; pleins d'un noble courage, Des tyrans étonnés ils fatiguent la rage ; Remplis d'un saint espoir, par le ciel consolés , Leurs cœurs dans les tourmenls ne sont point ébranlés : Les bourreaux en silence admirent leurs victimes. Dieu lui-même applaudit à leurs vertus sublimes; Le feu qu'il alluma dans ses apôtres saints Passera de leurs cœurs chez les peuples lointains ;

Plus d'un peuple à ses pieds vient briser son idole ;
Le loup dans le bercail vient dévorer l'agneau;
Dieu vient sauver les bons et punir les pervers;

And vengeance to the wickcd; at return
Of him so latcly promis'd to thy aid ,
The Womaii's Seed; obscurely then forelold,
ISow ampler known, thy Saviour and thy I.ord :
J'ai vu ce que peut voir la foiblesse mortelle ;
C'en esl fait , Dieu puissant ! je l'aime et le révère ;
Sois à jamais mon guide, et mon maître, el mou père
Tu vois tous les enfants avec un œil égal;
Par toi toujours le bien esl triomphant du mal;
Ton exemple m'apprit que tout homme esl soldat;
Michel répond alors poiu- la dernière fois : « Oui, craindre , adorer Dieu , le contempler sans cesse, Voilà ton sort : c'est là qu'est toute la sagesse. Quand lu pourrois nombrer tous les asU'es divers, Parcourir l'empjrée, approfondir les mers. Embrasser d'un coup d'œil tous les astres du monde , Ce qui vole dans l'air, ce qui nage dans l'onde;
Last, in the ctouds, frora heavcn to be reveal'd hi glory of the Father, to dissolve Satan with his pervcrted world; then raise From the conflagrant mass, purg'd and refin'd, INew heavens, new earlh, âges of endiess date,
55o Founded in righleousness, and peace, and love; To briiig forlh fruits, joy and eternal bliss! »
He endcd ; and thus Adam last replied : « How-soon hath thy prédiction, seer blest, Measur'd this transient world, the race of time, Till time stand fix'd? beyond is ail abyss, Eternity, whose end no eye can reach.
Greatly instructed I shall hence départ; Greatly in peace of thought; and bave my fill Of knowledge, what this vessel can contain;
66o Beyond which was my folly to aspire. Henceforth I learn, that to obey is best, And love with l'ear the only God; to walk As in his présence; ever to observe llis providence, and on him sole dépend; MercifuI over ail his works, with good Slill ovcrcoraing evil , and by small Accomplishing great things; by things deera'd weak Subvcrting worldly strong, and worldly wise By siniply meek : that suffering for truth's sake
s?" Is fortitude lo highest viclory.
And, to the faithliil, death the gale of life; 'J'aught ihis by his example, wliom I now Ackuowlcdge my Redeeiner ever blest. »
To whom thus aiso the' angel last replied : << Tliis havii.g learn'd, thou hast attain'd the sum or wisdom ; hope no liigher, though ail ihe stars Tiiou knew'st by name, and ail the' ethereal powers. Ail secrets of the deep, ail nature's works. Or works of God in heaven, air, earth, or sca,
