LIVRE XII

4<o To teach ail nations what of him they learn'd And his salvation; them who shall believe Baptizing in the profluent streanc , the siga Of washing thcm from guilt of sin to life Pure, and in miod prepar'd, if so befall. For death, like that which tlie Redcemer died. AU nations they shall teach ; for, from that day, ISot only to the sons of Abraham's loiiis Salvation shah be preach'd, but to the sons Of Abraham's faith wherever through the world; iio So in his seed ail nations shall be blest.

Théo to the heaven of heavens he shall ascend With victory, triumphing through the air Over his foes and thioe; there shall surprise^ The serpent, prince of air , aud drag in chains Through ail his realm, and there confounded leave; Then enter into glory, and lesume His seat at God's right haod, exalted high Above ail names in heaveu; and thence shall corne, When this world's dissolution shall be ripe, 460 With glory' and power to judge both quick and dead ; To judge the unfaithful dead, but to reward His faithful, and receive them into bliss , Whether in heaven or earth ; for then the earth Shall ail be paradise, far happier place Than this of Eden , and lar happier days. »

So spake the' arch-angel Michael ; then paus'd , As at the world's great pcriod; and our sire , Replète with joy and wonder, thus replied: « O Goodness in6nite , Goodness immense ! 470 That ail this good of evil shall produce. And evil turn to good ; more wonderful Than that which by création first brought forth Light out of darkness ! Full of doubt 1 stand , Whether 1 should repeut me now of sin

« Ne craius rien, dit Michel : leur prolecteur suprême, Pasteur toujours soigneux, à son troupeau qu'il aime Enverra les secours que son père a promis ; L'Esprit saint auprès d'eux remplacera le fils. C'est lui qui , de l'amour entretenant la flamme , Imprimera sa loi dans le fond de leur ame; Par lui , les yeux verront les dangers sans terreur, La douleur sans foiblesse, et la mort sans horreur. Je les vois ces martyrs; pleins d'un noble courage, Des tyrans étonnés ils fatiguent la rage ; Remplis d'un saint espoir, par le ciel consolés, Leurs cœurs dans les tourments ne sont point ébranlés : Les bourreaux en silence admirent leurs victimes. Dieu lui-même applaudit à leiu-s vertus sublimes ; Le feu qu'il alluma dans ses apôtres saints Passera de leiu-s cœurs chez les peuples lointains ;

By me done, and occasion'd; or rejoice

Much more, that much more good ihereof shall spring;

To God more glory, more good-will to mca

From God, aud over wrath grâce shall abound!

But say, if our Deliverer up lo heaven

4S0 Must re-asceud, what will betide the few His faithful, left among the' unfaithful herd, The enemies of truth? Who tlien shall guide His people, who défend? Will they not deal Worse with his followers than with him thev dealt? »

« Be sure they will (said the angel), but from heaven He to his own a Comforter will send, The promise of the Falber, who shall dwell His Spirit withio llicm; and the law of faith, Working through love, upon their hearls shall write,

490 To guide them in ail truth ; aud also arm With spiritual armour, able to resist Satan's assaults, and quench his fiery darts; What man can do against them, not afraid, Though to the death; against such cruelties With iuward consolations recompensed.

And oit supported so as shall amaze Their proudcst persecutors: for the Spirit (Pour'd 6rst on his aposdes, whom he sends To' evangelizc the nations, then on ail

5oo Baptis'd) shall them with wondrous gifts cndue, To speak ail tongu^s, and do ail miracles. As did their Lord before them. Thus they win Great numbers of each nation, to receive With joy the tidings brought from heaven : at lenglli Their ministry perform'd, and race well run, Their doctrine and their story writteu left, Thev die; but in thtir room, as they forewarn , Wolves shall succced for leachers, grievous wolwes,. Who ail the sacrcj mystcries of heaven

5io To thcir own vile advantages shall turn Of lucre and ambition; and the trulb, Wilh superstitions and traditions taint, Lcft oulv in those written records pure, Though not but by the Spirit understood. Tben shall they seek to' avail themselves of namcs. Places, and tilles, and with thèse to join Secular power; ihough feigning slill to act By spiritual, to themselves appropriating The Spirit of God, promis'd alike and given

^2o To ail believers; and, from that pretence. Spiritual laws by carnal power shall force On every conscience; laws which none shall find Left them inroU'd, or what the Spirit within Shall on the heart engrave. What will thcy thcn But force the Spirit of grâce itself, and bind His consort liberty? what, but unbuild His living temples, built by faith to stand, Their own faith , not another's ? for, on earth , Who against faith and conscience can be heard

*.3o Infallible? jet many will présume : VVhence heavy persécution shall arise On ail, who in llie worship persévère Of spirit and truth; ihe rest, far greater part, Will deera in outward rites and specious forms Religion satisfied : truth shall relire Bestuck with slanderous darts, and works of faith Rarely be found; so shall the world go on, To good raalignant, to bad men benign; Under her own weight groaning; till the day

îiW Appear of respiration to the just.

And vengeance to the wicked; at return

Of him so lately promis'd to thy aid ,

The Womau's Sced; obscurely then foretold,

New ampler known, thy Saviour and thy Lord ;

J'ai vu ce que peut voir la foiblesse mortelle ;

C'en est fait , Dieu puissant ! je t'aime et te révère ;

Sois à jamais mon guide, et mon maître, et mon père:

Tu vois tous tes enfants avec un oeil égal ;

Par toi toujours le bien est triomphant du mal ;

Ton exemple m'apprit que tout homme est soldat ;

Michel répond alors pour la dernière fois : « Oui, craindre , adorer Dieu , le contempler sans cesse, Voilà ton sort ; c'est là qu'est toute la sagesse. Quand tu pourrois nombrer tous les astres divers, Parcourir l'empyrée, approfondir les mers, Embrasser d'un coup d'oeil tous les astres du monde , Ce qui vole dans l'îiir, ce qui nage dans l'onde;

Last, in the cloutk, from hcaven to be reveal'd In glory of the Father, to dissolve Satan with his perverted world; then raise From the conflagrant mass, purg'd and refin'd, New heavens, new earth, âges of endless date,

55o Founded in righteousness, and peace, and love; To bring forth fruits , joy aud eternal bliss ! ••

He ended ; and thus Adam last replied : « How soon hath thy prédiction, seer blest, Measur'd this transient world , the race of timc , Till time stand fix'd? beyond is ail abyss, Eternity, whose end no cye can reach.

Greatly instructed I shall hence départ; Greatly in peace of thought; and hâve my fill Of knowledge, what this vessel can contain;

56o Beyond which was my folly to aspire. Henceforth 1 learn, that to obey is best. And love with fear the only God; to walk As in his présence ; ever to observe His providence, and on him sole dépend; Merciful over ail his works, wilh good • Still overcoming evil, and by small Accomplishing great thiogs; by things deem'd weak Subverting worldly strong, and worldly wise By simply meek : that suffering for truth's sake

^7° Is fortitude to highest victory.

And, to the faithful, death the gâte of life; Taught this by his example , whom I now Ackuowlcdgft my Redeeraer ever blest. »

To whom thus also the' angel last replied : «< This havÏLg learn'd , thou hast attain'd the sum Of wisdom; hope no higher, though ail the stars Thou knew'st by name, and- ail the' ethereal powers, AU secrets of the deep, ail nature's works. Or works of God in heaven, air, earth, or sca,
