PREFACE

François Coppée's "On rend l'argent" is characterized by constant allusion to the daily facts of French and Parisian life. Our text is therefore of spécial pedagogical value, as it gives the student an introduction to the material conditions of French life at the same time that he is leaming the French language. The scène of the story is in Paris. Since there is fréquent référence to the topography of the city, a map has been provided so that the student may consult it and thus hâve in mind the location of the chief places of interest.

In the présent édition of "On rend l'argent" it has been

thought best to omit some passages of the original text to make

it more sçrviceable for class use. Thèse omissions, however, dô

not detract from the interest of the story. The text of the

édition of 1898 has been followed. Those who are acquainted

only with the first édition of " Les Vrais Riches " (1892) will

perhaps be interested to leam that in the last édition several,

though unimportant, changes in the text hâve been made by

the author.
