FRENCH PRONOUN ‘ON
(wish to be) traité. On fait actuellement à Québec un pont qui sera dit-on, une des merveilles du monde. On n’est pas nécessairement malheureuse parce qu'on est pauvre; en effet, on connaît telle femme riche qui est bien malheureuse. La manière dont on . emploie le temps présent décidera probublement de uotre sort pour l'éternité. On ne peut pas pluire à tout le monde.
Version
Our greatest desire is to brivg to a sufficient knowledge of the English language, our French-Canadian friends who are now studying in the schools and colleges. May we thus contribute to their future welfare. We are convinced that if the young students know the English and the French languages perfectly, they will bave in their possession all that is necessary to make a good living everywhere. The work is hard enough, but the reward must encourage them to underiake the task courageously.
The pronoun on is sometimes used to represent only one person, with 1he meaning of quelqu'un ; it ought to be translated, in such instances, by somebody. |
Ex. : Somebody calls you.
On vous appelle.
N.B. Une chose qu'il faut bien remarquer, c’est
que les verbes actifs ayant pour sujet le pronom on
peuvent toujours être tournés au passif, ce qui facilite la traduction de on.
Ex. : On vous appelle.
You are called.
Vous êtes appelé.
On bâtit un pont à Québec.
À bridge is being built at Quebec.
French pronoun “ En”
Strictly speaking, this pronoun does not exist in English, it is translated by equivalents.
Ex. : I know this man you will be satisfied with him.
Je connais cet homme vous en serez content.
As may be seen by the preceding example, en is translated by à personal pronoun preceded by the preposition required by the verb.
Ex. : Do you speak of my brother ?
Parlez-vous de mon frère ?
Yes we speak of him.
Oui nous en parlons.
ÆEn used to represent things is sometimes translated by a possessive adjective.
Ex. : I like this wine, but I feur its effects. J'aime ce vin, mais j'en crains les effets.
In the following cases en is not . anslated : How many books have you ?—-! have fifteen.
Combien de livres avez-vous ! J'en ai quinze. I have several, I have many.
J'en ai plusieurs, j'en ai beaucoup.
