37. Some adjectives and adverbs form irregular comparatives and superlatives; a list of those used in this course is given on pp. 316, No. 93.

41. The following rules must be retained with regard to French mimerais:

(a) un, vingt et un, trente et un, etc., i.e., numerals ending with the word un are the only ones that take the féminine (mute e) in connection with féminine nouns, e.g.:

vingt et une pages (twenty-one pages) (h) quatre-vingts drops its final s when folio wed by numerals; the s is retained before nouns of number, e.g.:

quatre-vingts millions (eighty millions)

(c) cent is never preceded, nor followed by a hyphen. It remains unchanged when followed by other numerals, but takes the plural (s) when preceded by a numéral, e.g. :

cent pages (hundred pages) deux cents pages (two hundred pages) but: cent deux pages (one hundred and two pages)

(d) When numerals below 100 follow each other the hyphen is required, as shown above.

(e) There is no linking in pronunciation, or spelling, before huit and onze, e.g. :

le huit et le onze (figure eight and figure nine)

42. See under French Calendar further détails about numerals.
