THE WHIP-POOR-WILL
Whip-poor-will, 0, Whip-poor-will !
Echo to me from thy hill, Ail tlie mem'ries sweet and dear, Thon wak'nest to my waiting ear; In quick sad notes around me brin g, The days of yonth, and to me sing, In tones so tender, thongh so shrill:
Whip-poor-will, 0, Whip-poor-will!

Whip-poor-will, 0, Whip-poor-will !
From beyond the ruined mill, — Thon know'st not how upon thy note, Sweet visions of m y cliildhood float; Of car es and joys, of other days, Of flowered and of thorny ways, My feet hâve trod through good and ill i Whip-poor-will, 0, Whip-poor-will !
Whip-poor-will, 0, Whip-poor-will !
Sitting on the mossy sill
Of the mouldering cabin door,
Where little feet may tread no more j
Sing of the loves that clustered there,
The strong, the brave, the young, the fair,— -
To whom my heart is tnrning still :
Whip-poor-will, 0, Whip-poor-will !
Whip-poor-will, 0, Whip-poor-will!
When twilight falls on vale and hill, And silence weds the evening star, I listen to thy song afar, TilTon tliy itérant refrain, The living past cornes baek again, And long-lost joys my spiiit fill. — Whip-poor-will, Ah! Whip-poor-will!
