PART III
POÉSIES 1. LA MARSEILIAISE
This national song was composed at Strasbourg by a young
French officer, Roucer pr Lis1i (1760-1837), in the year 1792, when France was threatened with invasion by the foreign powers. At a dinner given by the mayor of the city, the
wish having been expressed by him that some one might write a new War-song which would be an inspiration to the Repuÿ lican soldiers, Rouget de Lisle retired to his room with his violin that same evening, and composed both words and music of this famous hymn. The next day he sang it in the presence of the mayor. It was then published and immediately sprang into popularity. The name, /a Marseillaise, is said to have been given to it on account of its being sung in Paris for the first time “by the troops from Marseilles. on their entrance into the city, and again at the attack on the Tuileries on
August 10th, 1792.
Marchons, rchons !
Qu'un sang impur abreuve nos sillons!
Marchons, marchons !
Qu'un sang impur abreuve nos sillons!
