L'EXILE
Feançois-René de Chateatjbeiand was born at St. Malo In 1768. He travelled in America, returned to France at the time of the Révolution, and emigrated in 1792. At the time of the Restoration in 1&23, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs and afterward took a prominent part in political matters till 1830. He died in 1848, and was buried on the rocky islet of Grand Bey, in front of St. Malo.
He was the leading literary spirit of his time, which was one of transition from Classical models to the new spirit of Romance. Among his principal works were Atala, a romance of America, and le Génie du Christianisme. He wrote several poems, of which the following one is perhaps the most popular.
Combien j'ai douce souvenance
Du joli lieu de ma naissance !
Ma sœur, qu'ils étaient beaux, les jours
De France !
0 mon pays ! sois mes amours.
Toujours !
Mon pays sera mes amours
Toujours !
