Cette étude historique sur la démocratie américaine, dont plusieurs fragments ont paru dans la Revue des Deux Mondes , de 18117 à 1860, a été écrite avant la redoutable commotion qui agite en ce moment les Etats-Unis. Elle n’est donc pas une œuvre de circonstance ; mais si elle n’a pas été entreprise pour expliquer la crise actuelle, elle renferme cependant, sur la nature des maux dont les Etats-Unis sont atteints depuis leur origine, quelques indications qui, je l’espère, ne manqueront pas d’intérêt pour ceux qui prennent souci du sort des sociétés démocratiques.
