TO MESSRS E. L.ia\HRAQtE, E. MARTIN AND Y. CAMPENON

Chees Goxfbères,

An Author always higfaly appréciâtes the honour which translation of his ideas iuto a fordgn laoguage confers upon him. 1 could not therefore be otherwise than ^^tified when I learfied that Messrs J.-B. BaiUière had proposed and that you had accepCed of renderiog any works of mine into the french longue,

You, who are so arduously engaged in the dutîes of professionnal life^ who by yoar expérience therein are so well qualifled for the undertaking.

Itis wholly without affectation that I say how much 1 wish the materialhad been more worthy of your labours. There is much in my works which 1 would gladly retouch and render more explicit, had time permitted me to do so. My practical occupation in Surgery bas outrun my power to record the resuit of expérience so complelely as I could wish. On the wholc, however, 1 believe they pretty fairiy express my views on most subjects up to a late period : never forgetUng that the process of modifying our ideas which the student*s life involves, always continues, for when we cease to be students^ our teachings soon cease to be useful.

So far as I can judge, you hâve rendered my meaning clearly. You bave my best ihanks for the able and friendly manner in which the task bas been accomplished.

I am, chers confrères,

Your verv faithfullv

IIE.NRY THOMPSON.
