THE NINTH IMTERNATIONAL CON- GRESS OF ORIENTALISTS, TO BE HELD IN LONDON IN 1892.

The ninth International Congress ot Orientalists, to be held in London in

À General Meeting of the English Signatories and Representatives of the International Assembly of Orientalists was held in London on January 15, 1890, at which (by Resolutions L and IL.) it was resolved to hold the next (or Ninth) Congress in London, September 1—10, 1891, on the basis ot the Ftatuts définitifs adoptés par l’Assemblée Internationale, laid down at the first Congress in Paris, in 1873.

An Organizing Committee was appointed, and communications were opened with the French General Assembly. (See »Record of Proceedings”, page 10).

At the London on April 29, 1890, progress was reported, and it was announced that Sir Henry Rawlinson, G.C.B., etc., had accepted the Honorary Presidency, and Sir Mountstuart Grant Duff, G.C.

S.[., etc, the Presidency. Additions were made to the Committee, and four Honorary Secretaries were duly appointed, viz., Professor Douglas, Dr.

Leitner, Mr. J. K. Hewitt, and Dr.

Bullinger. At this meeting, Dr. Leitner announced that the proceedings, etc.

of the English Committee had been ratified in Paris on March 31, 1890, and that the formal transfer of powers from the French members of the Commission Administrative of 1873 had been received by the Committee. Resolution VI. of this meeting duly acknowledsed the Resolution of the Paris meeting of March 31, as printed on page 14 of »Record of Proceedings.”

Two meetings of the Central or Organizing Committee have since been held in London on June 12 and October

Second Meeting, held in,

LA f VARIETES.

9, 1890. At the former of these, with | the view of expediting the business, |

it was resolved (Resolution Il). »That this Committee act independently, in accordance with the Statutes, and with

the powers delegated to itself by the

French Committees, and in harmony with their Resolutions.” The Committee

was again enlarged, and since then the |

following changes have taken place :—1).

The Hon. President and President have resigned; and, at the latter meeting (October 9, 1890), Professor Max Müller was duly elected as the President. 2) Dr. Leitner’s name no longer appears in connection with the Committee or Secretariat.

With these exceptions, everything remains the same: the continuity of the Committee is unbroken; its powers are unchanged : while the Minute Books —the Official Record of Proceedings— are in the hands of the original Secretariat.

At the meeting of the Committee, held on November 10, 1890, it was resolved that in view of the fact that other important Congresses will be held in England in September, 1891, and that that year would also be inconvenient for many foreign delegates, who on that account had not yet joined; and acting under the full powers transferred to and vested in this Committee, the date of the Ninth Congress of Orientalists, to be held in London, be deferred till the following year, viz, September, 1892.

The Committee (which has the cordial support of Professor Dillmann, of Berlin, and Professor Kuenen, of Leiden, Presidents of former Congresses: of Professor Bühler, of Vienna, Professor Petersen, of Bombay, and other Delegates) is now engaged in arranging the business of the Congress, and invites the membership of &{l Orientalists, so that the next Congress may see them all united in the prosecution of their great and important labours,.
