LL
translated in Malay by Zni tempat ada adjar pookoo! sampeh aloos dan sampeh bagoos; Apa selumpang di Dunja kurang prabot tadjam (in this place is taught to forge finely and nicely; why then be auxious that there will be a want of sharp tools in the world?) Prof. H. translated: «I only say this: In this place the forging and working of iron is learned; who will now fear that there will be a want of good necessaries among mankind». (Ik zeg alleen: Op deze plaats leert men het ÿzer smeden en bewerken. Wie zal nu vreezen, dat onder de menschen gebrek Zi] aan goede benoodigdheden ?).
Of course, the Malay translation is the proper one, and that
of Dr. Hoffmann is wrong.
The seventh inscription is that on the house of a merchant
ÆÆ À (in Malay Zèumah orang dägang, house of a tradesman).
Above the door we read:
Sing yai yeu tao translated in Malay by: Zdup dari Dagang bagimana patut (The carrying on of the trade is in the proper way). Pr. H. translated: «(Each) career has (its) path». ([Ieder] beroep heeft [zÿne] baan). The meaning being, as in the Malay version, «My business is honest».
Upon the door is the distich:
IDD HMES EX
translated in Malay by: Arta bagimana ajer berdjalan op anjut trada abisnja; Kauntungan kalu tempoh baij datang sendiri. (Money is like running water, or like an unceasing stream. — The gain comes of itself when the times are good). Pr. H. translated: «lt is with treasures as with a running brook; their course (or the pleasure they afford) is incessant. It is with gain as with spring-air: they come of themselves». (Het is met de schatten gesteld als met eene vloeiende beek; hun loop (of het genoegen dat ze geven) houdt niet op. — Het is met de winst gesteld als met de lente-lucht; zi] komen van zelf).
The exact meaning is: «<Riches are as a living brook speeding on without ceasing; (Grains are as vernal breezes coming of their
own accord».
The eighth inscription is that on a private dwelling Æ À
(in Malay: ni rumah njang trada berdagang; tjuma orang berumah
tanga sadja, this is a house in which no trade is carried on, and only one in which people live).
Above the door we find the characters:
