Page 13. — 11. jaunet. In addition to being an adjective, this word means buttercup. By a popular extension it is also used to mean any piece of gold money. Translate yellow boy.

21. dans. The difference between dans and en in expressions of time is that the former means “ at the end of,” the latter “ within.”

Page 14. — 4. soyez. The subjunctive is regularly used after all expressions of emotion.

NOTES

T2. au papa. The so-called faire- construction is quite important. If the infinitive depending upon faire has a pronoun object this pronoun object precedes faire and not the infinitive. If both faire and the infinitive have objects, the personal object of faire must be made an indirect object; hence au.

22. heur’. In poetry the mute e of heure would form a separate syllable which would make the line one syllable too long. Therefore it is omitted and an apostrophe used to denote its omission as all we ordinarily hear is heur\ anyway.

27. en. En is simply equivalent to de plus a pronoun of the third person of either gender or number. It usually refers to things, rarely to people. Frequently its antecedent is understood or indefinite, as here. En here refers to the general situation.
