Scène X

54 2—11 faudra bien qu'on y fasse droit: They will

Page ^^linei*] — Une puissance . . . un pouvoir: An authority, a power. Notice. — Pouvoir is the infinitive of the verb ; puissance is the présent participle with the final ance ; so that pouvoir simply marks the action, and puissance something lasting, permanent : On a la puissance de faire une chose, et on exerce le pouvoir de la faire. It is for this reason that we say la puissance d'une machine^ the power of an engine ; Une machine de la puissance de 50 chevaux, An engine of fifty-horse power.

55 6 — Pour ce qui est du commerce : With regard to mercantile affairs.

55 II — Voici ma note : This is a mémorandum of what I

want.

56 I — Carrosse : Carriage ; introduced in sixteenth cen-

tury from Italian carrozza. Notice. — Carrosse infers an idea of luxury or pomp, and can only be used in particular cases ; like the Italian Word, it was once féminine, but is now masculine. Voiture, f.^ a coach, a carriage, is the word in gênerai use.

56 5— A la bonne heure ! Very well !
