Second Case, Dhow No. 424.
Affidavit.
I, Edwin V. Underhill, Lieutenant, Royal Navy, of Her Majesty's ship « Philomel », in command of the second cutter of that ship, having Sub-Lieutenant Asser, in command of the first cutter, under my orders, do hereby

certify that dhow No. i24, three of thecrew and four slaves, v^ere captured by me under the following circumstances :
On Ihe 13th July, 1896, at 7 p. m., I heard that a dhow (No. 124) had been wrecked off Suleiman Point that aflternoon.
I proceeded there and found from a fisherman that she had run on the reef at 1 p. m., and had landed slaves, who were beîng taken to Pansa Island, preparatory to being taken to the mainland (Pemba Island).
With the first cutter in company I then proceeded to Pansa Island, but found that the slaves had been taken across. I found, however, three of the crew, one of which was reported to me as being the captain of dhow No. 134, and as thèse men confessed to having landed slaves from dhow No. 124, on the 13th July, I took them prisoners.
I then sent the first cutter to land a party, if necessary, with the man I thought was the captain of the dhow, as guide, to look for the slaves.
At 7 A. M., the next day, four slaves were brought to me, who were recognized by the crew as having been landed by them.
The total slaves taken in this case was four, and crew, three.
Both dhows, I believe, were under Arab colours; no papers were found.
I visited No. 124 at low water, and found ail moveable gear had been removed, and that she was unfit to go to sea, even if she was got ofi' the reef, which would bave been a matter of great difficulty.
Signed this 16th day of July, 1896.
