do hereby ccrtify that the native dhow c( Dege » was detained by me under ihe following circumstances :
On Thursday, the 23nd instant, we in tlic second cutter, lying in British Channel, observed a dhow running do\vn close to Buesbi Island. On a blank bcing fired she stoppcd and we boarded hcr, finding her name to bc the « Dege », a dhow which the interprcters had previousiy been informed was a notorious ronoerof slaves undera former captain named Juma. [ informed the captain that I would detain bis vossel, and examine the passengers and crew.
Sending her to the dépôt I embarked the only woman passenger, and one of the crew in the cutter, and proceeded to board two olher dhows that were in the vicinily, but could get no information from them as to the « Dege's » move'.nents.
By the time we reached the dépôt both the passenger and crew had informed the interprcters that the « Dege » had landed seven slaves that morning, in charge of two Arabs off Matemben Reef.
On returning to the dépôt I landed the crew, and keeping them in separate places they after somc time turncd Queen's évidence, as did also the husband of the woman who had first confcsscd that slaves had been landed.
I embarked ail hands on board the dhow, and on the arrivai of the « Thrush » took the captain on board as a prisoner on Friday theâlth.
Every endeavour was made by the interprcters to obtain information as to the disposition of the slaves, but, ailhough they were aided by the Arab Magistrate at Kohani, without success.
On Saturday two more of the passengers gave similar information to that which the crew and other passengers had given.
Considcring that 1 had enough évidence I detained two passengers who belonged to Zanzibar, and fiveof the crew, allowing the rmiainder to procecd.
