Var

Si cette âme, en un mot, saisissant le vulgaire. (MS.)

1. 91. du Panthéon peut chasser ta poussière most likely alludes to the belief, held throughout the nineteenth century, that the remains of Voltaire and Rousseau had been at the Restoration thrown into a ditch. This legend was recently disproved by the opening of the vaults. The officiais, headed by the famous scientist Berthelot, found the skeleton of Voltaire and the body of Rousseau still in a perfect state of préservation : but the air did its work, and in a few seconds the whole of the two forms crumbled to dust.
