Regina, Aug. l'S. — Pétitions are l)eing circulated throughout the Province by thcLoj^al Orange Lodgejwith a view of testing the strength of the movement in Saskatchewan for one school and one language of instruction. This move is not being made, according to those in charge of the campaign, with any idea of embarrassing the Government of Saskatchewan, but simply for the purpose of giving voice to the convictions of a large number of people in favor of one school.
The pétition is as follows :
To the Hon. W. M. Martin, Premier of the Pro^^nce of Saskatchewan.
The pétition of the undersigned provincial electors residing in Saskatchewan.
1. That the French language has no officiai status in the Pro^^nce of Saskatchewan, and in our opinion, the same should be absolutely eliminated, either as a médium of instruction, or a subject of study in our primary schools.
2. That as the great war has now euded, we beheve the time is uow ripe to consohdatc ail classes in the proN-ince in one undivided wliole.
382 l'action française
3. That this consolidation can be better achieved through the union of the childi-en in fhe province than in any other manner, and we believe this unification is absolutely impossible so long as separate schools exist.
4". That separate schools are well known to be a disiutegrating force in the province and retard éducation espccially in the higher grades.
5. That separate schools are foimd to be burdensome to the taxpayer, not only of the separate school district, but of the public school district, where separate schools are in opération, resuit ing in a lower grade of teachers and poor equipment in both pubhc and separate schools.
6. Your petitioners beUeve that the eastern provinces of this Dominion hâve absolutely no right to formulate any educational System for the western p^o^'inces and that strict independent autonomy in this respect should be insisted upon.
7. That we are of the opinion, that this important matter should be considered outside the range of party politics.
Yoiir petitioners, therefore, deraand that the Législative Assembly of the Province of Saskatchewan shall so amend the School Act to give effect to.
1. The aboUtion of the use of French language cither as a médium of instruction as subject of study in the primarj' schools.
