In Jack Hardy's home (chez Jack Hardy) there was no room for the idle... Maggie helped her mother; now that she was well, Luna must work (s'occuper). Maggie knew very well how to take the cream (^écrémer) from the big pans and even how to make butter. . .

The little girls, once the dairj' work finished, could amuse themselves as they chose (^bon leur semblait) . . . There was a grotto or niche scooped out of the red, soft rocks, where water fell drop by drop; the entrance was hidden by bushes... This was Maggie's favorite retreat, which she proudly called " my house"... There Maggie would put two volumes on the little table. She became absorbed in her reading. Luna found the hours a little long and soon began to dream and seemed on the point of recalling the past — then ail vanished and the child gave a sigh (poussait un soupir) which was almost a moan (gémissement).
