TRANSLATION
After Juliette had made friends with the children on board, time passed rapidly — sunset came too soon, and she was quite surpriscd to land in New York on Sunday morning.
Then began the interminable journey across the continent . . . The days and nights followed each other and the train rolled on... Juliette tired, had a headache one evening and at dinner time she refused to accompany her mother to the dining-car.. . . Lisbeth was undressing the child when what happened? A formidable shock, a noise as of rocks thrown against each other — then a great silence — soon broken by cries... The train was passing over a bridge, when it gave way. . .
Juliette lost consciousness at once... Thrown out like an India-rubber bail, the child fell much farther away than the other travelers . . . Madame Daloz was found, her right arm broken in two places.
As soon as it was possible, she went to find some trace of Juliette among the wreck.
