Princess Thérèse's letters to Prince André usually ended with thèse words: "Wanda is a child who should do us honor. . . . I think (crois) that I am positively (pour de bon) beginning toi love her."
Wanda's lessons greatly displeased (déplaisaient souverainement) her. Though, at school, she had been a good pupil, she now made ail sorts of difficulties for a problem in arithmetic. Her aunt would sometimes hâve Wanda called (l'envoyait chercher) thus interrupting the studies. Mme Richard went bravely to the Princess (trouver la Princesse) and said that Wanda would be less and less studious if she saw that her aunt cared so little (tenait si peu) that she should be so. The Princess yielded (se rendit), but she felt angry (en voulut à) with the governess.
One fine aftemoon, Wanda whistled to Bobtail. A wild idea crossed (traversa) her mind. She climbed on the fence, jumped (se jeta à califourchon) astride his back. Bobtail gave (fit) a leap, and Wanda clung to his mane.
Just as the child thought she must f ail, she felt Thomas's strong arms catch her (la retenir).
Mme Richard took Wanda from him and carried her to the bouse. The Princess wished to help her, but she was stopped by the expression (regard) on the governess's face.
Princess Thérèse was much shaken (ébranlée) by the shock and kept her bed for three days. During this time she had deeply (beaucoup) reflected.
