TRANSLATION
In the midst (au milieu) of this confusion (remue-ménage) the guests arrived.
Louis Veyron, the painter, was the Princess's right-hand man. He became the leader (boute-en-train), organized excursions, and became very popular.
Wanda refused to leave her room. The young man who had heard her story promised that he would talk to the little one (moucheronne).
Wanda instinctively feit (devina) that he was her friend and said to him: "I want Mamma."
Louis Veyron made a bargain with her: He would find her mother if she would go down to dinner and be amiable (gentille) with every one.
The next day, he whispered (souffla) to Wanda: "At Barbîzon at the Mère Chauveau's. Write her a letter and I will take it to her to-morrow."
That afternoon, ail the guests went out. Instead of wrîting to her mother, Wanda wrote to her aunt. She thanked her for ail ehe had done for her, but as she loved her mother more than anything else in the world, she would go to her (la retrouver).
Wanda went to the forest and took the road to Barbizon. She lost her way and wandered about for hours. The daylight vanished (la nuit n'était pas loin), the rain fell, and the little girl came near dying (faillit mourir).
At last, she heard the noise of wheels, called out with ail her remaining strength, and was saved. She could answer no questions, but muttered "Mamma, at Barbizon at Mère Chauveau's." But that was enough (suffisant).
